Study-Work-Live in AU!

Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) Visa- This visa is for international students who have recently graduated (within the last six months) from an Australian educational institution and lets the holder live, study and work in Australia temporarily after they have finished their studies.

Two streams under this subclass 485 visa:

  • Graduate Work stream: is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that closely relate to an occupation listed on the ‘Medium to Long Term Strategic Skills List’.

  • Post-Study work stream: is for international students who have recently graduated with an eligible qualification from an Australian education institution, regardless of their field of study.

Eligibility Requirement:

  1. Be under 50 years of age

  2. Hold an eligible visa

  3. Have a recent qualification in a CRICOS registered course

  4. Meet English language ability

  5. Satisfy character requirements

  6. Further requirements set out below under each stream.

Applicants for the Graduate Work Stream are required to also provide the following, along with those set out above:

  1. The visa application includes evidence that you had applied for a skills assessment for your nominated skilled occupation by a relevant assessing authority

  2. Your skills have been assessed by a relevant assessing authority as suitable for your nominated skilled occupation ('suitable skills assessment')

  3. You have met the Australian study requirement in the past six months

  4. Each degree, diploma or trade qualification used to meet the Australian study requirement is closely related to your nominated skilled occupation.

Each occupation has a relevant Skills Assessing authority where the skills assessment must be applied from.

For example:

If the qualification is a Trade Occupation, the assessing authority is Trades Recognition Australia and an assessment is undertaken through the Job Ready Program (JRP).

This is a four-step employment-based skills assessment program that provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate that your skills and job readiness are relevant to your nominated occupation, in an Australian workplace before you apply for migration in Australia.

The four steps in the JRP are:

  • Step 1 - Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)

  • Step 2 - Job Ready Employment (JRE)

  • Step 3 - Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)

  • Step 4 - Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)

A successful PSA Outcome (step 1) is used to apply for the subclass 485 visa for trade occupations and then enables you to obtain employment experience and continue with the JRP steps 2 to 4.

If the nominated occupation is a Nurse, the skills assessment must be applied for from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council.
